The common feature of synthetic rubies is that the colors are bright and relatively uniform, and it is difficult for the naked eye to find inclusions therein, and the interior is very clean. Most of the natural rubies on the market are more or less obvious so-called "cotton mites", that is, a combination of inclusions and internal fissures distributed in a certain direction (controlled by the internal structure of the crystal), sometimes with a filamentous inclusion. For natural rubies that are difficult to find obvious inclusions, long-wave UV lamps (ordinary portable pocket detectors) can be distinguished from synthetic rubies.

Experiments show that natural rubies and synthetic rubies emit red fluorescence under long-wave UV lamps, but synthetic rubies are brighter and more brilliant.
