On the morning of the 30th, the Beijing Consumers Association released the results of a recent comparison test on down jackets. The study included 53 different down jacket models and one type of overcoat. Out of these, 36 samples met the national quality standards, making up 66.6% of the total. Among the remaining 18 non-compliant samples, 13 had serious issues such as underweight filling, shortness in length, poor craftsmanship, and false labeling. Five samples were found to be made with crushed wool and down feathers, all originating from Bairong.
In last year’s testing, ZARA was previously listed for having low-quality fill and velvet content. This year, it has once again appeared on the black list due to similar problems. A ZARA coat priced at 999 yuan claimed to contain 70% down and 30% feathers, but upon testing, only 51.1% cashmere was found inside.
The samples for the comparative test were randomly purchased by staff from the Beijing Consumers Association, acting as regular consumers. The sources included major shopping malls, supermarkets, clothing markets, and online retailers across Beijing, ensuring coverage of the main production areas and manufacturers of down garments. The test was conducted by the China Textile Association's Textile Fur Quality Testing Center, which evaluated five key aspects: product labeling, cashmere content, feather content, loft, and cleanliness.
Luo Gang, director of the Consumer Relations Department at the Beijing Consumers Association, noted that the results of four consecutive years of tests show that down jackets sold in large department stores tend to be of higher quality compared to those from wholesale markets. In the past two years, counterfeit down jackets filled with shredded wool have mainly come from clothing wholesale markets, raising concerns about the authenticity and quality of products in these sectors.
Consumers are advised to be cautious when purchasing down products, especially from less regulated sources, and to check labels and certifications carefully to ensure they are getting what they pay for.
