India plans to double its exports to Japan within two years

At present, India is steadily advancing the strategic plan for the export of textiles to Japan. The EPA (Economic Cooperation Agreement) between the two countries will take effect in August and its implementation results are worth looking forward to. India estimates that by actively improving product quality and production capacity, its exports to Japan will reach twice the current value after two years.

Last year, Japan imported about 18 billion yen worth of clothing from India. Compared with the annual market share of 83.3% imported from China, Japan's imports from India accounted for only 0.8%. However, India intensified its efforts to promote Japan by inviting Japanese apparel companies to participate in its International Apparel and Fabrics Exhibition (IIGF) and holding product exhibitions in Japan, and looked forward to further opening up the Japanese market in the future.

The Indian government, the Indian Apparel Export Promotion Council (AEPC) and industry players have high expectations of the EPA. The president of AEPC stated that EPA will promote the exchange between Japanese and Indian textile and apparel industries. The corporate representative industry believes that taking EPA as an opportunity, the commercial activities of India and Japan will truly take the first step.

In India, apparel manufacturing and processing industry has solved the employment of 60 million people and has become an important pillar industry in India. In 2010 (April 2010 - March 2011), Indian apparel exports increased by 4.2% year-on-year, totaling US$11.16 billion, and this year it is expected to complete US$14 billion. In addition to Japan, India is expanding its market share in Russia, Israel, and Latin America.

Based on AEPC, from 2009, India participates in the group's annual participation in the JFW international Fashion Fair held in July in Japan. The Ministry of Textiles of India stated that it is hoped that by participating in such activities, it can publicize India’s overall strength in the textile field.

The primary challenge for India's expansion of exports is to improve product quality and reduce delivery disputes. In addition to actively supporting the introduction of advanced technologies through the support of third countries, the Indian government is working to solve the problem of increasing production capacity. The Indian Ministry of Commerce and Industry also stated that there is no way to raise support for the textile industry without addressing logistics issues. Therefore, the government is currently actively preparing for the construction of related facilities.
