In the eyes of many, corn husks, pine shells, bamboo sticks, rattan, and green grasses—common in rural areas—are just discarded materials. However, for Gong Haihua, an ordinary worker from Jiangsu, these were potential treasures. By turning waste into value, he became known as the “Grass King.” Gong Haihua, a 27-year-old native of Nantong, Jiangsu, had once worked in renovation in Beijing. During a visit to his wife’s hometown in Weifang, Shandong, he noticed villagers weaving practical and elegant household items using materials like grass, corn stalks, and rattan—items that were often considered useless in farming. His wife proudly explained that during the off-season, almost every family engaged in weaving, not for big profits, but just to earn some extra money for daily expenses. Intrigued, Gong saw an opportunity. With growing urban interest in eco-friendly and natural products, he believed these handmade items could be a hit in cities. After returning to Beijing, Gong opened a small shop called “Return to Nature” on the fourth floor of the Yaxiu Clothing Market in Chaoyang District. He started with simple grass products, pricing them low to attract customers. To his surprise, the first day was a huge success—he sold 32 grass bales. A young woman even bought four in one go. Word spread quickly, and soon, people from all over came to check out the unique products. Within a month, he sold nearly 2,000 pieces and earned over 4,000 yuan. Encouraged by this, he expanded his product range, including more creative items like woven baskets and decorative home goods. One day, a couple suggested adding more variety, such as home furnishings. This inspired Gong to experiment with different shapes—round, oval, and even irregular forms like rhombuses and funnels. His creativity paid off, and sales soared again. A student from an art academy pointed out that the products were all white, suggesting color would make them more appealing. This led Gong to develop a natural dyeing technique, introducing vibrant colors that matched modern furniture styles. Soon, his products featured intricate patterns, flowers, and landscapes, making them even more attractive. In 2005, a TV station took notice of his shop and produced a special program, boosting his reputation nationwide. As demand grew, Gong registered a trademark, “Indus Green Park,” and expanded his business through franchising. Branches sprouted across China, from Jinzhou to Urumqi, and he even opened a store targeting foreign customers in Beijing's embassy district. Today, Gong Haihua’s company has over 100 franchise locations, and he continues to innovate, aiming to become the leading figure in the “grass industry.” His journey is a testament to how creativity, sustainability, and a keen eye for opportunity can turn simple, discarded materials into something truly valuable.
