make a fairy tale dress from a bridesmaid dress

This week is all about Kids Clothes Week, and this time they're focusing on upcycling! The idea is to take old clothes and turn them into something new and exciting. If you’ve got an old bridesmaid dress or prom dress lurking in the back of your closet that you’re not quite sure what to do with, why not transform it into a beautiful, fancy dress? If you're a fan of the Great British Sewing Bee, you might remember the finale of season two when the contestants were tasked with turning a wedding gown into a little girl's dress—without using any patterns! While I didn’t have to deal with such strict rules, it was still a lot of fun to combine upcycling with a sewing pattern. Upcycling gives you the satisfaction of taking free or cheap clothes and giving them a new life. Using the original hems also saves a ton of time and effort. Combining that with a sewing pattern makes the whole process smoother and ensures a great fit in the end. Recently, someone generously gifted me two pale pink 100% silk bridesmaid dresses, which have been hanging in my closet for far too long. These dresses were clearly meant to be transformed into something special, and what better choice than the ultimate special occasion dress—the Fairy Tale Dress. Think of all the gorgeous dresses showcased in the Fairy Tale dress roundup! Though every upcycle is unique, I thought it would be helpful to share the steps I took to transform these dresses and offer some tips along the way. I began by carefully deconstructing the dresses. As Mondo from Project Runway All Stars once mentioned, buying inexpensive clothes from thrift stores and taking them apart can teach you invaluable construction techniques. I highly recommend using a seam ripper to carefully remove the lining and any zippers. In this case, I didn’t end up using the original zipper since it was too short, so I cut away the top part of the lining with scissors. However, I kept the bottom part intact because the bridesmaid dress had its lining attached to the skirt at the hem—a feature I wanted to preserve. Before starting to sew, it’s important to clean the fabric thoroughly. Hand-washing the dress with delicate detergent and allowing it to air dry will help remove any dirt or stains. Did you know you can hand wash items labeled “dry clean only”? It’s a great way to save money. For this project, I ended up using only one of the long A-line skirts, a women’s size 4 skirt that measured 41 inches in length and 60 inches around the hem. Surprisingly, this was all I needed to create a size 6 Fairy Tale dress. Using a rotary cutter, I cut off 16 inches from the hem, which became the skirt of the Fairy Tale dress. Since the bottom of the bridesmaid dress was already hemmed, I didn’t have to hem the new dress, saving both time and effort. Additionally, the original skirt came with a lining attached at the hem, so I didn’t have to line the skirt either. Next, I cut out the bodice front and back pieces from the remaining fabric. Fortunately, the original skirt had a center back seam, which I opened up to insert the invisible zipper. While this project wasn’t entirely upcycled, I did incorporate some store-bought elements, like the bodice lining, an invisible zipper, and the collar fabric. After that, I simply followed the sewing instructions for the Fairy Tale dress pattern, making adjustments as needed while attaching the skirt. One major advantage of upcycling is that much of the work was already done for me, such as finishing the skirt. When working with upcycled fabrics, it’s crucial to use the right iron setting, sewing needle, and thread to match the fabric type. The primary difference between this upcycled version and a standard Fairy Tale dress lies in the skirt. Instead of a gathered straight skirt, I used a slightly wider gathered A-line skirt, resulting in a fuller look than the size 6 pattern typically produces. Are you planning any upcycling projects during Kids Clothes Week? Have fun repurposing items that are no longer in use and watch them transform into something amazing!
