my favorite liesl + co. pattern: all the tunics

I must admit, choosing just one favorite Liesl + Co. pattern felt impossible, so today I’m sharing my top two: the Gallery Tunic + Dress and the Late Lunch Tunic. Both have become staples in my wardrobe, each with their own unique charm. I’ve made the Late Lunch Tunic twice now, and the Gallery Tunic three times, tweaking the latter quite a bit with each iteration. Let’s dive into why I adore these patterns so much. First up is the Gallery Tunic. This pattern is incredibly straightforward to sew and offers plenty of room for customization. The popover placket design feels both timeless and contemporary, making it a versatile piece that works well for any occasion. Plus, having the option to choose between a band collar and a one-piece collar adds another layer of flexibility. I’ve even experimented by adding ruffles to the band collar for a touch of flair. The fit of the Gallery Tunic is loose and flowing, which I absolutely love. It looks particularly stunning when crafted from drapey fabrics. The pattern includes a single back pleat that you can adjust according to your preference, allowing for additional shaping if desired. Here’s how my journey with the Gallery Tunic has evolved: ### Gallery Tunic #1 For my first attempt, I created a wearable muslin using poly voile. To suit my taste, I extended the placket by 1 ½ inches and pressed the pleat an extra inch downward. I also performed a full bust adjustment (FBA) and a full bicep adjustment, though I later realized I could have widened the biceps even more. The fabric is transparent, so I wear it over a camisole to ensure comfort. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/9c46721c04b3955b68fb312d3f427b43.jpg) ### Gallery Tunic #2 On my second try, I decided to get creative. I added a back yoke and a ruffle to the band collar. Additionally, I transformed the tunic into a fully buttoned shirt—though this was unintentional since I mistakenly cut the front into two pieces instead of one continuous piece. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/177413e97cf6f3cccd08130da4c3e63d.jpg) The cotton twill voile fabric I chose is lightweight yet warm, perfect for pairing with long cardigans during colder months. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/5fc98b8cfa1ec9e533906a9061b12106.jpg) ### Gallery Tunic #3 For my latest version, I extended the placket by a total of 4 inches. I also broadened the back yoke from my previous design and converted the inverted pleat beneath it into a box pleat. I included a pocket, too, though I skipped the extra buttons at the base of the placket because it stayed closed without them. This version is made of modal denim, which is both fluid and robust. While it’s not quite long enough to pair with leggings, I’m eager to create another one soon that will be. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/d971168e15ff6015a21578e46575ee16.jpg) Now, let’s talk about the Late Lunch Tunic. Released early in Liesl + Co.’s collection, this pattern has been a favorite of mine for seven years! I fell in love with its front yoke adorned with buttons and the princess seams. The cut-on sleeves are not only easy to sew but also elegant and figure-flattering. Even though the pattern predates Liesl + Co.'s cup-size offerings, it provides excellent instructions for performing a full bust adjustment on the seams, which I used to tailor the pattern to my measurements. For my initial version, I worked with a denim-like linen fabric, altering the center front to feature an inverted pleat instead of gathers. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/965b54f881f7443a843e1c61d2fd6ec6.jpg) For the second version, I opted for a double-faced gauze fabric, lengthening the yoke and gathering the skirt for a more voluminous silhouette. ![My favorite tunic sewing patterns for women](http://bsg-i.nbxc.com/blog/1f993e8b99134acf9e83ba5ebaf2bd4d.jpg) Unfortunately, I gave these tunics away after my fourth child was born, as I felt they no longer fit my body. However, revisiting these photos has reignited my desire to recreate them. If you’re a fan of tunics, I highly recommend giving this pattern a shot! --- In conclusion, both the Gallery Tunic and the Late Lunch Tunic are exceptional patterns that cater to different styles and preferences. Whether you’re looking for something casual or polished, Liesl + Co. has crafted patterns that cater to every sewist's needs. Happy sewing!
