Starting a new series today! We're going on some exciting field trips to discover unique places where you can find sewing supplies. Our goal is to help you explore alternative shopping destinations for sewing-related items without breaking the bank. I think I’ve come across some fantastic tools and incredible deals.
First stop: everyone’s favorite store, IKEA. With over 400 locations globally, there’s likely an IKEA near you. Known for its modern furniture designs, the brand offers much more than just home furnishings. Let me share what I uncovered during my visit.
As soon as you walk into the store, make sure to pick up a free tape measure. Who doesn’t love a good freebie? This one features both inches and centimeters on either side.
When it comes to fabrics, IKEA has plenty of options. Most fabrics are priced under $9 per yard, making them perfect for heavier-weight sewing projects. Interestingly, I found some basic solid-colored cottons for just $2.99 per yard.
Their 15-piece sewing kit includes essential sewing accessories such as two pairs of scissors, a seam ripper, seam gauge, painting template, two tailor's chalks, needle threader, tape measure, three thimbles, safety pins, a box of pins, and assorted needles.
For quick repairs or hemming curtains or clothes, their iron-on hemming tape is quite handy. Have any of you tried this product yet?
You’ll also find fabric scissors and pinking shears available.
IKEA sells a set of four spools of thread in a box, including white, black, and natural shades.
They have ironing boards and covers, along with compact tabletop ironing boards.
Lint rollers (and their refills) are great to keep on hand for removing lint from your fabric.
Take a look at their linens, like bed sheets and blankets, for potential fabric finds—perfect for repurposing projects.
There’s a fleece throw measuring 47x63 inches, which equals 1 3/4 yards of fabric for just $1.99!
Sometimes creativity requires thinking outside the box. For instance, you can use a woven placemat as a yoke to create a unique Hide-and-Seek dress, similar to what I did here. Another creative idea would be transforming inexpensive rugs into capes, as shown in this example.
To easily turn a tube of fabric, use a thick drinking straw and chopstick. A chopstick alone can help push or coax a sharp point from a corner when turning it right side out.
Keep some clear tape handy for taping together PDF patterns.
While wandering around IKEA, I also checked out items that could be ideal for a sewing room. Like many of us, most of my storage solutions and cutting/work tables in my sewing space are from IKEA, and I absolutely love them! Here are some of my favorite picks.
These storage trays are perfect for keeping sewing supplies organized or holding your current embroidery or Sashiko sewing project.
Whether labeled or not, these wheeled carts can hold numerous sewing items to keep everything tidy.
I store my fabric stash in bins on cube storage shelves like these.
Add a clip-on work lamp to your workspace for better lighting.
Consider these ideas for cutting tables or sewing tables.
Don’t forget a stool to pair with your sewing table.
That’s all for today. We’ll continue this series in the future, taking you to other unusual places to discover sewing supplies. Where should we head next?
Stay tuned for more adventures in the world of sewing!
