unusual places to find sewing supplies: IKEA

Today we're launching a new series where we'll be exploring some unconventional spots to hunt down sewing supplies. We want to share some alternative places where you can shop for sewing-related items without breaking the bank. I believe I've uncovered some practical tools and fantastic deals. First stop—everyone's favorite store: IKEA. With over 400 locations globally, chances are there's an IKEA near you. Known for its modern furniture designs, IKEA offers much more than just furniture. Let me walk you through what I discovered. As soon as you step into the store, make sure to pick up a complimentary tape measure. It's always nice to get something for free! One side measures in inches, the other in centimeters. When it comes to fabrics, there's quite a variety to choose from, and most seem to be priced under $9 per yard. They primarily offer home decor fabrics, which are perfect for projects requiring sturdier materials. However, I also spotted some basic solid-colored cottons for just $2.99 per yard. Their 15-piece sewing kit set includes essential sewing accessories such as two pairs of scissors, a seam ripper, seam gauge, painting template, two tailor’s chalks, needle threader, tape measure, three thimbles, safety pins, a box of pins, and assorted needles. Their iron-on hemming tape is great for quick fixes or hemming curtains and clothes. Has anyone tried this product yet? You'll find fabric scissors and pinking shears available. They sell four spools of thread in a box containing white, black, and natural shades. Ironing boards and covers, as well as tabletop ironing boards, are also available. Lint rollers (and their refills) are handy for removing lint from fabrics. Take a look through their linens like bed sheets and blankets for potential fabric finds (think repurposing projects). They have a fleece throw measuring 47x63 inches, equivalent to 1 3/4 yards of fabric, priced at just $1.99! Sometimes you need to think outside the box. For instance, you can use a woven placemat as a yoke to create a unique Hide-and-Seek dress, similar to what I did here. Another idea would be using inexpensive rugs to craft capes, as shown here. A thick drinking straw paired with a chopstick can help easily turn a tube of fabric. A single chopstick can also be used to push or guide a sharp point when turning a corner right side out. Stock up on clear tape for piecing together PDF patterns. While wandering around IKEA, I noticed several items ideal for a sewing room. Like many of us, most of my storage and cutting/work tables in my sewing room are from IKEA, and I adore them! Here are some of my suggestions. These storage trays would be perfect for keeping sewing supplies or housing your current embroidery or Sashiko sewing project. Labeled or unlabeled, these wheeled carts can hold numerous sewing items to keep everything organized. I store my fabric stash in bins on cube storage shelves like these. Attach a work lamp to your workspace for improved lighting. Here are some ideas for cutting tables or sewing tables. Don't forget a stool to pair with your sewing table. That wraps things up for today. In upcoming installments, we'll continue this series by introducing you to other unusual places to discover sewing supplies. Where will our journey take us next?
