It’s such a delight to finally share with you the full details about *Woodland Clearing*, my very first fabric collection designed for the wonderful team at Robert Kaufman. As we speak, this collection is already gracing the shelves of fabric stores everywhere. Comprising 27 vibrant prints, *Woodland Clearing* is crafted on a luxurious cotton lawn that feels absolutely divine.
I’ve always admired Kaufman fabrics—they’re simply incredible. Whenever we’re creating sample garments or shooting patterns, their textiles are often the go-to choice. Kaufman is renowned for its Kona Cottons, which come in an impressive spectrum of solid hues. But they’re also gaining recognition for their diverse range of apparel fabrics, including denim, chambray, corduroy, jersey knits, and more. It’s fantastic to see quilt shops expanding their offerings to include these versatile fabrics, making them more accessible to everyone. Personally, I’ve faced challenges finding high-quality apparel fabrics outside of quilting cottons, and I know many of you have too.
When the idea struck to design my own fabric collection, Kaufman felt like the perfect partner. Working with them has been an absolute joy, but designing this collection wasn’t without its challenges. Each print is inspired by my watercolor paintings, and we put immense effort into preserving the authentic watercolor aesthetic. That meant incorporating a vast array of colors into every design—even prints that appear simple are actually composed of numerous shades. It took time, patience, and countless strike-offs to achieve the desired effect. You can see the intricate detail in the selvedges. I truly believe the end result was worth every bit of effort!
The fabrics are printed on the same cotton lawn as Kaufman’s Cambridge lawn solids, and we even introduced some new solid colors to the Cambridge line to complement the collection. Now you can effortlessly mix and match the prints with solids, and don’t forget—you can blend these fabrics with Kaufman’s other collections, like canvas, corduroy, and linen. For example, in the Woodland Clearing photo story I shared recently, we showcased how well these fabrics work together to create a stunning wardrobe.
One of my favorite prints from the collection is also available as a coated fabric, allowing you to craft practical yet stylish pieces like raincoats. We’ve created a brand-new waterproof Secret Agent Trench Coat for S, and she absolutely adores it. Stay tuned for more details and photos!
If quilting is your thing, you’ll be pleased to know there are two free quilt patterns available for the *Woodland Clearing* collection. The *Bowerbird* quilt pattern is a particular favorite, offering a charming design that highlights the beauty of the fabrics. Another standout is the *Wooded Paths* quilt. The softness of the fabrics makes them ideal for patchwork, and the finished quilts feel incredibly cozy.
Recently, I posted on Instagram about how lawn fabric and the *Lullaby Layette* pattern pair perfectly together. I made a set from *Woodland Clearing* for some friends who are expecting soon—it’s both functional and adorable.
Of course, lawn fabric isn’t just for quilts; it’s perfect for clothing, whether for kids or adults. You saw many of the children’s outfits in our recent photo shoot. Here are a few women’s pieces to spark your creativity.
I hope you’ll enjoy sewing with these fabrics! The collection is already shipping to stores, so I’d love it if you could ask your local fabric shop to carry it. It’ll also be available through various online retailers. If you’ve spotted it somewhere or know a store that stocks it, please let us know in the comments—every little tip helps others find it!
I’m eager to hear what you think about *Woodland Clearing*. Let me know if you plan to try it out for your next project. Happy sewing!
